Abstract
1,132,122. Cleaning metals. HOUSEMAN and THOMPSON Ltd. March 13, 1966 [April 2, 1966], No. 14718/66. Heading C7E. Copper-containing iron oxide scale is removed from metal surfaces, such as those in the interior of steam-generating equipment, by dissolving the iron oxide in an acid solution buffered to a pH between 2À5 and 5, then bringing copper into the solution by adjusting the pH to between 8 and 10À5, Na heptonate being employed to sequester the iron and prevent or reduce precipitation of iron hydroxide. Suitable buffering agents are di-or trimethylamine, mono-, di-or tri-ethanolamine, isobutylamine, n-amylamine and ammonia. The last of these may be used with an oxidizing agent such as sodium bromate. The acid solution may contain an organic acid, such as malic acid, or an inorganic one, such as hydrochloric acid.
