Abstract
Liquors containing up to 1% of H2SO4 and up to 1% FeSO4 are treated with finely divided CaCO3 in an amount at least sufficient to neutralize all the free acid present and to precipitate substantially all the iron as hydrated ferric oxide, the liquor being aerated during neutralization. The finely divided CaCO3 may be precipitated CaCO3, powdered whiting, or ground chalk a substantial part, e.g. 90% or more, of which has a particle size below 25 microns. The quantity employed may be that equivalent to the H2SO4 plus 1.5-2.0 times that equivalent to the FeSO4 and this may be supplemented by lime, Na2CO3 or powdered limestone. 90% or more of the total acidity may be neutralized by the CaCO3 the remainder being removed by an alkali-metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide. The process may occur at at least 20 DEG C. and the precipitate may be flocculated by adding a starch/CaCl2 gel before or after precipitation. Should the liquor contain oil this may be absorbed on the ferric oxide precipitate.
