Abstract

<PICT:0888085/III/1> Waste waters obtained in the production of phosphorus, containing suspended and colloidal phosphorus, SiF6-and Ca++ ions and phosphoric acid, are neutralized to a pH between 6 and 8 by the addition of an aqueous solution or suspension of an alkali metal hydroxide and/or alkaline earth metal hydroxide to form a flocculent precipitate which is allowed to settle and removed. The alkali may be milk of lime or lime water containing sodium hydroxide. As shown, waste water in tank 1 is neutralized by milk of lime introduced through a valve 5 controlled by an antimony electrode 3 and pH-controller 4. Calcium phosphates are precipitated in tank 1 in the form of flocks which envelop suspended phosphorus particles. The liquid then passes to a tank 6 where solids settle and sludge is removed by a pump 7, while purified water is removed by a pump 8. Phosphorus sludge may be removed before neutralization, and the purified waste water may be subjected to a subsequent chlorination. Specification 835,859 is referred to.
