Abstract

1,131,361. Sheet forming. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. 6 Oct., 1965 [14 Oct., 1964], No. 1607/65. Heading B5A. Hollow peripheries are formed by vacuum drawing a heat-softened clamped thermoplastic sheet on to a heated first forming surface to form domes therein, said domes having a height substantially equal to half the height of the required hemisphere, and then transferring the domed sheet to a second forming member on which the hemispheres are finally formed. The first surface is a vertically reciprocable male die (19) having projections (20) and the second surface is a vertically reciprocable female die (29) having corresponding recesses, to which the domed sheet is transferred by a combination of vacuum and blowing. In an alternative embodiment the first surface may be a female die and the second a male die. Two such hemispheres are superimposed and butt-welded around their circumference to form a ball.
