Abstract

1277757 Sheet forming MONTECATINI EDISON SpA 11 July 1969 [12 July 1968] 34932/69 Heading B5A An article having corners or edges having a minimal radius of curvature are manufactured by deep drawing a heat-softened sheet approximately to shape in a female mould and then moving part of the mould inwardly to urge the partially shaped sheet more firmly against the mould walls and into the corners or edges of the mould cavity. In one embodiment a heat softened sheet is drawn into a mould 2 having a movable bottom 6 and an undercut forming frame 3 located about the mouth of the mould. The sheet is initially drawn into the cavity as shown in the Figure and the bottom is then raised to force the formed sheet into close contact with the walls of the mould (see Fig. 6, not shown). In an alternative embodiment (see Fig. 7, not shown) the four side walls of a mould of rectangular cross-section are movable towards the central axis of the mould to effect the compression of the drawn sheet.
