Abstract

[Also in Division B3] A drop forging press has a device for checking and measuring any horizontal misalignment of the lower and upper die platens 3", 4", comprising a vertical vent aperture 11" in the upper platen disposed above at least one vertical vent aperture 8c, 8d in the lower platen, the apertures being remote from the actual die surfaces 5, 6 and being associated with bores 10", 7c, 7d in the platens, a pipe 9c, 9d leading to the or each bore in one platen for the introduction of compressed air, and a pressure gauge in the or each pipe for indicating the air pressure when the platens are closed. There are three apertures 8c, 8d, 8e in the lower platen which are normally aligned with a single aperture 11" in the upper platen, Fig.7 (not shown). The lower stroke position of the movable upper platen 4" is determined by pressure air escaping from an aperture 18 impinging on the upper platen, as described in Specification 954, 001. The air pressure is indicated on a gauge 16 and actuates a contact 22 controlling a magnetic valve 23 which then admits compressed air into pipes 9c, 9d, 9e. The air pressures therein are indicated on gauge 16c, 16d, 16e and when compared with predetermined standard pressures, show the extent and direction of any misalignment of the platens. In other embodiments, Figs.3, 4 (not shown), one or two apertures are provided in the lower platen. In another embodiment, Fig. 8 (not shown), the aperture or apertures in the lower platen communicate with an annular or part annular groove or grooves in the upper surface thereof; this arrangement is used to allow for slight relative rotation of the dies.
