Abstract

113,087. Schlesinger, S. Jan. 27, 1917, [Convention date]. Holding open and closed; runners.-Relates to runner and tip-cup arrangements. The tip-cup 12 is provided with sleeves 13, 16, which are mounted to slide on the runner sleeve 7 and a flanged sleeve 17 respectively. The sleeve 17 encloses a spring 15, which tends to force the tipcup towards the handle, a stop 14 on the runner limiting the movement. To close the umbrella, the tip-cup is grasped and drawn down, a projection 19 on a spring retainer within the hollow stick snapping into a slot 24 in the runner, as shown in Fig. 4. After gathering the tips together, the tip-cup is pressed away from the handle against the action of the spring to engage the tips, in which position it is held by the projection 19 snapping behind the sleeve 13, as shown in Fig. 3. In opening the umbrella, pressure on the finger-piece 23 first releases the tip-cup and then the runner. To facilitate the movement of the sleeve 13, the end part 19<a> of the projection 19 is bevelled off; and a notch 19<b> serves to hold more securely the sleeve 13 in its tip-holding position. The runner arrangement may be used in connexion with a spring opening arrangement, as shown in Fig. 2, the stretchers 4 being held by the notch part 6 of the runner and the springs 9 by the notch part 10.
