Opening and closing; holding open and closed; ribs and stretchers; runners. - In an umbrella arranged to open and close automatically, the operating-springs d inserted in the stretchers of the frame, Figs. 1 and 3, are attached to sliding bolts e, which in turn are connected by links m to a ring p on a runner slide a. Depression of a spring catch c allows the springs d to pull up the slide a and open the umbrella, a second spring catch f linked to an operating - ring n serving to hold the umbrella in this position. As the slide a arrives towards the end of its travel, an internal sleeve g comes into contact with a stop h and, moving over another sleeve k attached to the stretchers, removes the outwardly-sprung slotted lower end of this sleeve k out of engagement with a reinforcement l on the slide a, and thus allows the slide to travel until the sliding bolts e come into contact with the ends of rods o. These rods are jointed to the ribs in such a manner that the springs d through the bolts e exert a turning-movement tending to close the umbrella, this closure taking place when the catch f is operated to release the slide. In order to restore the original tension of the springs d, the handle part r is swung about its pivot 3 so as to pull down, by means of a linkage s, t, an internal tube u carrying the double-notched catch c. The slide a is thus lowered until its reinforcement l engages beneath the sleeve k, and the handle may then be returned to its normal position. A tip cup b is provided.
