Abstract

3830. 3rriedlaender, A. Feb. 15. Holding open and closed; ribs; stretchers.-Relates to umbrellas of the kind made with shortened stretchers, which are pivoted to the ribs at points near the top-notch, and consists in means for operating the runner so as to facilitate opening and closing. The stretchers are less than two-fifths of the length of the ribs, and the distance between the top-notch and the joint is less than one-third of the length of the rib. In one arrangement, the runner e, Fig. 2, is connected by a cord g &c. to a sleeve f, which is pushed upwards against the runner to open the umbrella. To close the umbrella, the sleeve f is disengaged from the usual catch and pulled downwards; when the cord becomes taut, the runner also descends. In a modified form of sleeve, shown in Fig. 7, the upper part f is enlarged so as to fit over the runner, so that the stick need not be reduced in section as shown in Fig. 2. In this case, the connexion between the runoer and the sleeve is in the form of a thin rod l with a hooked end m. A device for locking the sleeve is shown in Fig. 4. Attached to the handle is a fixed tubular piece p<1> provided with a slot r, through which passes a spring s on an inner movable sleeve p<2>. When the operating- sleeve p is pulled downwards, a projection t on its interior passes over the spring s and becomes locked by it, while the bent portion m of the rod l is held between the end of the operating-sleeve and a projection u on the inner sleeve p<2>. When the sleeve p is raised to open the umbrella, the spring s presses against the edge of the slot r and is pushed in, allowing the projection t to pass so as to disconnect the sleeve. The inner sleeve and spring s are again returned to their positions when the bent portion m pushes against the projection u.
