Abstract

1,130,210. Printing and stamping press. A. APICELLA. 6 Oct., 1966, No. 44715/66. Heading B6C and B6J. A reciprocating press for manufacturing labels simultaneously applies heat sealable material to prints upon, and cuts a web; the heat sealable material is supplied from a second web running at right angles to the first web, the two webs being stationary and juxtaposed during printing and application of the heat sealable material by stamping. A press according to the invention is illustrated in Fig. 1, wherein the main frame 2 contains a reciprocating piston member 4 driven by conventional motor and gearing, and both the piston member 4 and the upper frame 3 contain pluralities of corresponding dies 10, 11, 12 and 10<SP>1</SP>, 11<SP>1</SP>, 12<SP>1</SP>, the upper dies 11, 12 being inked by rollers 13a and 13b. A continuous rubber web W is fed over rollers 20, W 1 , W 2 , W 3 and through slots S. A paper web P is fed from a supply roller 21 on to the web W; the webs are moved intermittantly being stationary during printing. A further web F of heat-sealable material, e.g. gold foil, gold leaf or pigment coated plastic is similarly fed at right angles across web P between the stamping dies 10, 10<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 4). Die 10 is heated, and when the piston 4 brings the dies together, the foil is applied to the web P and fixed to the latter. The second die 11 may be inked with one colour, while the third die may be inked with a second colour and is provided with cutting edges for blanking out the resultant labels from the web P. The sequence of operations is indicated in Fig. 4. Rubber web W carrying paper web P is fed in the direction of arrow W<SP>1</SP>, and web F is fed in the direction F<SP>1</SP>. In the area Y, each portion of heat-sealable material 55, 56 is applied by heater die 10; in the area Y die n prints a first colour A; in the area 0, die 12 prints a second colour B and also cuts out each label which drops into a tray T, (see Fig. 1), when paper web P is lifted off the conveyer web W.
