1294997 Embossing A APICELLA 28 May 1971 18103/71 Heading B6J A die 1, Fig. 3, for simultaneously heat transfering material to embossing and cutting a workpiece to form a label contains heating units and comprises an operative face 20, Figs. 1 and 7A, having raised therefrom a portion containing a secured design positioned between an outer cutting edge 22 and a less raised inner edge 23, and may also have a further secured design 21. In another form, Fig. 3A, the design 27, is secured into the face 20. In another form, Fig. 11, the design is on a portion raised from a plane extending from a cut-away portion 34 of the operative face. The die may be secured to the stationary bed 3 of a block machine, Fig. 1, and co-operate with a platen 4 mounted on a piston 5 reciprocated by a crank or other mechanism. The workpiece is a web 10 of paper or thin metal foil supported on a flexible rubber or other web 6, which webs are fed over the platen. A transfer web 13 comprising a flexible substrate 24, Fig. 11, and a foil layer 25, is fed from a spool 14 between the die and the web 10 and at angle, e.g. 90 degrees, to the feed of the latter. When the members 3, 4 are pressed together, the secured designs on the die produce releif designs on the web 10, Fig. 6A, while the outer edge 22 cuts the labels 8 out of the web 10 without cutting the web 13. The waste web 10 is rolled on to a spool 12. The web may be printed before embossing by printing-members 15. If a mating die 32, Fig. 11, is provided, or if the web 10 is multilayered, the web 6 can be omitted. Alternatively, the die may be mounted on a roller 47, between which and an impression roller 49 are fed a flexible support web 48, a web 40 previously printed on by a rotary multi-colour printing-machine 42, 43, 44 and comutating the workpiece, and a transfer web 45, the waste webs 40, 45 being rolled on to spools 51, 50.
