An overhead crane for unloading a ship 2 through an opening 1 in the side comprises athwartships beams 3 provided with extensions 5 which are swung outwards from a vertical position about hinges 7 by rams 13. A trolley 18 runs on the beams which are completed by a portion 27 pulled into position by a link 29 and secured by a hook 30. The extensions 5 support a cover 6 for the opening 1 and the beams 3 support the deck 4.
