Abstract
1,129,981. Sign formed from luminescent elements. SAINT-GOBAIN TECHNIQUES NOUVELLES. 13 Oct., 1965 [13 Oct., 1964], No. 43427/65. Heading G5C. [Also in Division C4] A self-luminous sign is formed by a plurality of glass bulbs each filled with a radioactive gas and coated on the inside with a luminescent substance, the bulbs may be arranged to form the character to be displayed, or the surrounding background to the character. Each bulb is filled with tritium and its filling end sealed in an epoxy thermosetting resin block, which is mounted, using a push fit, in a suitable aperture at the focus of a parabolic reflector of e.g. aluminium or glass. The resin block may be opaque or transparent. The reflectors may be held, by flanges on their front, against a transparent face plate. The reflectors, and their immediate surround, may form the only opaque parts of the screen, so that the characters they form show up as dark areas when the screen is back-illuminated, e.g. by an electric lamp mounted behind the screen. Alternatively the lamp may be in front of the screen. The screen may also carry a luminescent phosphor of slow decay, so that upon failure of an associated electric light source, the brightness of the screen falls only slowly to the level of the self-luminous units.
