Abstract

1,164,623. Uses of luminescence. BRANDHURST CO. Ltd. 22 Aug., 1966, No. 37493/66. Heading C4S. A method of making a self-luminous light source of the kind including a hollow gas-tight envelope coated internally with a phosphor layer 2 of thickness corresponding to 1 to 100 milligrams per sq. cm. and containing a radioactive gas (e.g. tritium) at a pressure from 5 to 300 cms. Hg, consists in depositing a reflecting material 3 (e.g. vaporized Al) directly on to the external surface of the envelope leaving a portion uncovered to constitute a light-emitting window 1. The source may be utilized for back illumination of a translucent dial or transparent instrument dial. The light may be collimated to a parallel beam, piped within the instrument assembly to the point to be illuminated or placed behind a screen printed or stencilled label. In embodiments, the glass envelope is rectangular, conical, cylindrical (50% coated exterior surface) or spherical (up to 80% coated area). In Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), the light source may be mounted in an acrylic moulding (4) and a shock-resisting resin casting (6).
