Abstract

Cylinders and like elements, rotating; optical apparatus, applications of.-Advertisements &c. 12 on a curved support 11 are viewed through a slot S in an envelope 10 rotating sufficiently fast for the design &c. to be perceived as a whole at any given moment by persistance of vision, although only narrow strips thereof are in fact seen in rapid succession. The design appears to be flat, convex, or concave according to the distance of the view-point A from the device, and is seen equally well from all sides. The envelope 10 may be rotated about an axis within or outside itself, and in the latter easel will, if black, be nearly invisible. Fig. 10 shows a number of designs 27 mounted in a casing 24 rotated about its axis 23. A slot 28 is provided for viewing each design, and one design only at a time is allowed to be seen by an opaque screen 29 having an opening 30 extending for an angle slightly less than that between two adjacent slots 28. The screen 29 is rotated coaxially with the casing 24 at a slightly different speed by means of differential gearing. A stationary transparent cylinder 20 encloses the device. The designs are illuminated by lamps 40 connected with leads by brushes and rings. The designs may be built up of luminous tubes or be phosphorescent.
