Abstract

1,129,414. Lid for storage battery with filling trough. OLDHAM & SON Ltd., and H. MORTON. 19 April, 1967 [20 April, 1966], No. 17281/66. Heading H1B. The lid of a storage battery has webs which co-operate with the partitions of the electrolyte container and a filling trough extending along it with a plurality of filling funnels depending from the trough, one into each cell compartment, the trough being formed with vent holes, one for each cell, a cover for the trough defining a filling aperture for the trough,. which cover has projections on its underside, each projection being associated with. one of the vent holes, and a flexible slide which is slideable from an open position in which the filling aperture is open and the cell vent holes are closed by the slide being forced down on the vent holes by the projections on the cover, to a closed position in which the filling aperture is closed and the vent holes are open. In the embodiment shown the slide has a strip 25 and arms 26, one to each cell. When the slide is in the open position (Fig. 4) the arms 26 are pressed down by the projecting cams 29 on the underside of the cover 19 closing the vent holes 18 by means of the pegs 28 on the end of the arms. In another embodiment (Figs. 6-8, not shown) the arms 26 do not have pegs but the vent holes are in raised bosses. When water is poured into the trough through the filling opening it enters the cells via the funnels 15 until the electrolyte in all the cells reaches the level defined by the bottom of the funnels 15 when excess shows in the trough. On closing the slide the vent holes are opened and the excess water runs into the cells.
