1,191,103. Filling and venting storage batteries. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 3 Oct., 1967 [15 Aug., 1966], No. 36412/66. Heading H1B. In an electric storage battery with a case divided internally into a number of cells and closed by a lid 13, the lid being provided with a number of filling tubes 16, one to each cell, the bottoms of tubes 16 being below the desired electrolyte level, and vent holes 17 in the sides of tubes 16 communicating with the cells above the desired electrolyte level, each tube 16 is provided with a member pivotally engaged in its bore 15 for movement between a first position in which it closes the respective vent and a second position in which the vent is open, engagement of a cover 22 with lid 13 moves each of the members from the first position to the second position and vice versa. As shown, the pivotable member consists of a semicircular strip 18 with an integral flap 19 at each end. Ports 20 extend from flaps 19 and engage grooves 17a in the wall of the bore so as to mount each strip 18 for angular movement within the hemispherical part of bore 15. On disengagement of cover 22 from lid 13 the ribs 24 on spigots 23 depending from cover 22 engage lugs 21 on strips 18 and thereby move strips 18 to their horizontal, first positions in which flaps 19 close vents 17. After electrolyte has been poured into channel 14 until the level in each cell is such that bores 15 are full of electrolyte, cover 22 is re-engaged with lid 13, ribs 25 on spigots 23 engaging with lugs 21 and thereby moving strips 18 to their second positions in which the angular position of flaps 19 leaves vents 17 open allowing trapped air to escape from the cells and liquid to enter the cells from bores 15 to fill the cells to the desired level.
