Abstract

1,180,118. Topping-up device. OLDHAM & SON Ltd., and H. MORTON. 24 April, 1968 [19 May, 1967], No. 23470/67. Heading H1B. A topping-up unit for a battery comprises (a) a plurality of float-valve-devices, Fig. 4, one for each cell of the battery each arranged for interlocking engagement in a filler opening in the battery lid and having a barrel, 4, which houses a float, 5, and is insertable through said opening, said devices being connected in series by tubes extending therebetween, (b) a filling chamber (9, Fig. 1, not shown) having an inlet tube connectible to a source of water, an outlet tube connectible to the first float valve device and a return tube connectible to the last float valve device and (c) means by which the filling chamber may be so positioned that water can flow under gravity from the source through the filling chamber to the first float valve device. The float valve device may comprise chambers 15 and 16, one, 15, communicating with the inlet, 17, and outlet (not shown), and housing valve 24 controlled by float 5, which may be of expanded rubber or rigid plastics foam. A vent tube 26 may communicate with the interior of the barrel, 4, and extend into chamber 16 and a second vent 28 may be provided in the top of chamber 16. The float-valve-devices may have finger grips for locking them into the cell (Fig. 2, not shown), the battery may be in a box and the filling chamber may have slotted lugs for fixing (Fig. 1, not shown).
