Abstract

1,142,010. Topping-up device. ELECTRIC POWER STORAGE Ltd. 26 July, 1966 [27 July, 1965], No. 32019/65. Heading H1B. A filling device is incorporated in an electric battery, and comprises an airlock within a filling tube extended down into the container, the device having an inlet bowl, &c. extending into the filling tube through a liquid trap. In one form, each cell has a lid 10, and the usual vent plug is replaced by a filling plug having a filling tube 15. Liquid is supplied to a cup 27 at the top of the plug and passes through a liquid trap to run down inside the tube 15 to the battery cell. When the level of the liquid reaches the lower end of the tube 15, the air inside it is trapped. Air inside the cell but outside the tube 15 is vented to atmosphere through passages 20, 21. As the liquid level outside the tube 15 continues to rise, a backpressure is built-up inside the tube, ultimately preventing more liquid flowing in. T-pieces 35 and flexible pipes 38 connect the filling plugs, liquid being supplied to one end of the tube thus formed and surplus liquid collected at the other end. In one modification, a battery has a one-piece lid (41), Fig. 2 (not shown), formed with a filling tube comprised by a depending skirt (45) extending down into each cell, and also formed with a trough (50) along its top. Short pipes (47) extend down through the trough (50) to liquid traps (48) in each cell. In another modification, a battery has a one-piece moulded lid (61), Fig. 3 (not shown), formed on its under surface with a trough (62) from which depend filling tubes (63), one for each cell, with a liquid trap (64), &c. between each cell and the trough.
