Abstract

1,141,035. Battery topping-up devices. ELECTRIC POWER STORAGE Ltd. 20 May, 1966 [20 May, 1965; 2 March, 1966], Nos. 21442/65 and 9222/66. Heading H1B. An electric storage cell such as that shown in Fig. 1 at 10 has incorporated a topping-up device for filling it to a desired level, including an air-lock vessel 13, extending down into the cell and opening into it through an opening slightly below the desired liquid level, and a supply of topping-up liquid 12 connected to the upper end of the air-lock vessel through a liquid trap 18 affording a weir so as to permit flow of liquid into the air lock vessel only when the head of liquid H 1 in the supply above the weir exceeds the head of liquid H in the cell above the opening at the bottom of the air-lock vessel. The cell is filled from a feed tube 11 via a branch 19, and a balancing container is positioned at 14 with a spill hole 14a. When a multiplicity of cells are to be filled, a corresponding number of air-lock vessels are connected to the feed tube 11,
