1,203,580. Storage battery with filling trough and vents. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 2 Jan., 1968 [22 Dec., 1966], No. 57353/66. Heading H1B. The lid of a storage battery has a longitudinal channel 12 communicating with each cell by a filling tube 13 extending to just below the desired electrolyte level, closed by a cover 16 having a longitudinal part 19 in a longitudinal groove 14 in the lid, part 19 having a series of grooves 21 such that they connect with vents 15 in the base of the groove when the cover is closed while part 19 closes the vents when the cover is open. Thus after filling or topping up the battery to the top of the filling tubes closing the cover opens the vents and equalizes the liquid level inside and outside the filling tubes. As shown in Fig. 3 longitudinal movement of the cover 16 is prevented by walls 23 which engage with slots 22 in hinge pin 19. In another embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the cover opens through 180 degrees and in both the fully open and the fully closed positions slots 24 in the cover are engaged by portions 25 of the walls of the groove 14.
