Abstract

112,893. Newton, P. A., (Soc. Anon. Brevetti Belloni). June 23, 1917. Ballasting.-The buoyancy of a submarine is regulated by pistons moved up and down mechanically in cylinders so as to draw water into and eject it from the ballast tanks, the space above the pistons being open to air under pressure to balance the water pressure on the bottoms of the pistons. The pistons 14 are operated through worm and bevel gearing by a wheel 30 having a tubular shaft 32 carrying the shaft of the helmwheel 31. An under presure is admitted to the tank 1, into which the tops of the cylinders 11 open, through a three-way cock 37 controlled by a pedal 36. The bottoms of the cylinders open into a water-tight compartment 3 containing oil, which rises into the cylinders when water is admitted to the compartment by opening the Kingston valves 10.
