Abstract

5447. Lake, S. March 5. Submarine vessels; ballasting.-In order to prevent shifting, water ballast is contained in tanks 2, 3 each having a movable partition 5 connected to a rod 6, which passes through a stuffing- box 7 and guide 8, in which it may be clamped by a screw operated by a handle 11. Three ballast compartments are shown separated by storage-cell compartments 4. The middle compartment 2 is, preferably, cylindrical, and its partition 5 is packed by a cup-leather. The partitions of the compartments 3 are connected to the bottom by bellows. Water is pumped into these compartments by means of a pump 15, which communicates with them by pipes 14 closed by cocks 16. A three-way cock 22 in the pipe 21 allows the upper part of the compart. ment 2 to communicate either with the living quarters of the boat, or with the reservoir of compressed air 25. A valve 18, operated by a handle 20, permits the escape of water from the tanks.
