Abstract

8116. Dodge, W. A. May 31, A.D. 1901, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901 ]. Trimming.-The trimming of submarine and other vessels is effected by causing compressed air, steam, or other fluid from the reservoir 11 to act, through the pipes 18, 19, 20, 21 and the valves 22, 23, 24, 25, upon mercury or other heavy liquid contained in two or more stand-pipes 1, 2, 3, 4, connected by spiral or zigzag tubes 9, 10. The stand-pipes are provided with filling-nozzles 7 and vent cocks 8, and contain floating pistons 6, which prevent undue fluctuation of the mercury, while the spiral pipes 10 prevent the mercury from shifting too suddenly.
