Abstract

1,128,108. Hollow-plate heat exchangers. SOC. ANON. DES USINES CHAUSSON. 15 June, 1966 [17 June, 1965], No. 26815/66. Heading F4S. A piled-element radiator core comprises a plurality of hollow aluminium plates 1, 1a . . . in, each of which is made of two plates placed together in such a way so as to define a plurality of channels 2 connecting two collecting chambers 3, of which only one is shown, each chamber being symmetrically disposed on either side of the plate and having a flange 4 upon which rest the flanges of adjacent members. Intercalary strips 14 are provided to enhance head dissipation. Correct positioning of the plates during stacking is achieved by having the corners of the plates bent along concurrent lines 6, 7 to form flaps 8, the flaps being of height greater than the distance between adjacent plates and making an angle slightly in excess of 90 degrees with the plane of the plate as a result of which on stacking the flaps overlap and so ensure proper alignment. When stacked, the radiator core is placed in a flux bath for brazing at the flaps and at the flanges 4, after which walls 5 of the collecting chambers 3 are perforated to form a continuous header. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown), the ends of the hollow plates are bent over along their entire width so as to delimit tongues (10) whose height is greater than the space between adjacent members, the tongues being provided with stampings (12 and 12a), which act as further centring means. In either of the two embodiments, the lateral sides of the plates may be provided with lugs 13 which act as abutments for the strips 14.
