Abstract

[Also in Division B5] In a system for press-moulding a succession of articles, the magnitude of the error in volume, height or ram pressure for each article relative to a desired value is measured and utilized to effect corresponding correction for the next article automatically. In Fig. 1, a brick 4 is formed in a moulding press actuated by a piston 2, travel of which is terminated when the fluid-pressure behind it reaches a value at which a pressureresponsive switch 16 closes a valve 24 to cut off the supply of fluid. The length of the brick so formed is measured by a potentiometer 26 detecting relative movement between the two ends of the press and any deviation of this length from a desired length is effective through an electrical follow-up controller 31 to operate a motor 12 adjusting the position of a back stop 11 for piston 2 so that the volume of material supplied for the next brick results in a brick of the desired size. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), movement of the piston is terminated by a switch which operates when the length of the brick reaches a desired value, and a potentiometer, operated by the fluid-pressure which is then applied, controls the setting of the back stop so that the next brick has the desired density. Use of both length and pressure signals, which are combined electrically by a bridge circuit, or mechanically, to effect correction, is referred to. In order to allow for the compressibility of the moulding material, a potentiometer operated by a roller pressing on a stream of the material is associated with a bridge circuit which is periodically balanced and connected to the main control circuit to modify the control. Use of induction, capacity, magnetic or radiation type detectors in place of potentiometers is referred to. Correction may be effected by varying the weight or rate of feed of the moulding material instead of adjusting the piston back stop. The moulding machine may be of the vibrating type.
