A combined beet-topping and top disposal device comprises a topping knife 4 from which the cut tops are fed up an ascending surface 5 to the inlet of a pneumatic conveyer 8 having a delivery pipe 13 which discharges the tops either into a receptacle alongside 17 or behind the device 16 or laterally on to the ground (Fig. 3). The ascending surface comprises a grid immediately adjacent to the topping knife and surmounted by a spinner 6. The spinnner may feed directly into the mouth 10 of the blower or an intermediate endless conveyer 7 may form an extension of the grid 5. The outlet of the delivery pipe comprises an adjustable hinged baffle 15, open downwardly. The inlet mouth of the blower is provided with a funnel-like part the lower edge of which is V-shaped, and entry of the tops into the blower is here assisted by a feed roller having resilient circumferential projections. The distance between the roller and the V-shaped surface may be adjustable, either by moving the roller (Figs. 9 and 10, not shown) or by moving the surface (Fig. 11, not shown). The apparatus may form part of a complete harvester, of which the moving parts, including the feeler wheels and blower, are driven from the power take-off of a towing tractor (Fig. 3).
