Cut hay, straw, &c. lying on the ground is gathered and chopped by a vehicle on wheels 15 pulled over the ground by a tractor, in which rotating bars 30, Fig. 3, in a semi-cylindrical casing pick up and chop the hay against stationary cutters 33 and pass it to a trough 36 with rotary helical bars 42 of opposite inclines to gather the chopped hay towards its centre or to one end at the entrance of a narrow elevator 49. The elevator 49 has paddles 51 on an endless chain to lift the material for delivery into a wagon towed behind or to deposit it on the ground. The drive for the choppers and conveyers is obtained from the power take-off 23 of the tractor. In another form, Fig. 7, corn stalks 119 are picked up by gathering aprons 114 the points 117 of which are pulled under the stalks near the ground. The choppers are rows of triangular blades 70 and the chopped stalks are conveyed by helical conveyers 75 to a fan 83 which blows the material up a discharge spout 86 (Fig. 5, not shown). In Fig. 13 rotating sharp cutters 136 hinged at 131 chop the material against an edge 140 and also throw the material up a discharge shoot 146.
