Abstract
1,127,212. Thermal switches. PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N.V. 3 Aug., 1965 [6 Aug., 1964], No. 33156/65. Heading H1N. [Also in Division C7] An electrically heated appliance such as a laundry iron 1 has a safety thermal cut-out in the heating circuit comprising a plug 3 of a metal of a relatively high creep strength at the normal operating temperature of the appliance but capable of plastic deformation at a temperature above the normal operating temperature but below the melting point of the metal of the plug and at least one leaf spring 4 applying a compression load on the plug 3, the plug being housed in a cavity in the part of the appliance to be protected against excessive heating and being held in the cavity by the pressure of the leaf spring 4, the arrangement being such that when the appliance becomes overheated the plug 3 yields under the spring pressure, permitting the leaf spring 4 to move sufficiently to operate the cut-out. In an alternative embodiment three springs are used, two carry co-operating contacts and bear on an insulator bearing on the third spring which bears on the plug. In a second alternative embodiment two springs are used, carrying co-operating contacts, bearing on the plug. The plug may be of an alloy of 95% zinc and 5% aluminium.
