Abstract

1,172,114. Thermal switches. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc. 20 Sept., 1967 [19 Dec., 1966], No. 42846/67. Heading H1N. A thermally-responsive electrical switch includes a final contact 9, a snap-acting thermally responsive plate element 37, coupled by a heatconductive member 42 to an electrically conductive heater plate 39 movable together with element 37 and a contact 43 movable into and out of engagement with fixed contact 9 in response to snap-action of element 37. Movable contact 43 is mounted on heater plate 39 secured by rivet 42 to element 37 which is a snap-acting bimetallic disc supported by ears engaging the arms 31 of a spider 19, the element being retained by snap-ring 35, spider 19 being mounted by rivet 20 on an adjusting screw 23 threaded in base 1, turning screw 23 raising or lowering bimetallic disc 37 with reference to fixed contact 9 and thereby altering its initial tension to calibrate the switch. Metal cover 7 is welded to metal base 1 to form a hermetically sealed compartment. Heater 39 shields element 37 from arcing and ceramic cap 11 shields base 1 and cover 7 from arcing. Fixed contacts 9 are connected to terminals 3. As shown, the switch has three pairs of contacts 9, 4, 3, heater 39 forming the common junction for a star-connected 3- phase motor, heater element 37 being heated partly by heat from the motor ports and partly by heat from heater 39 by conduction through rivet 42, by convection and radiation.
