Abstract

1,126,650. Anti-fouling coating compositions. TARR & WONSON Ltd. 1 June, 1967, No. 25374/67. Heading C4A. Anti-fouling marine coating compositions comprise a copper pigment and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane. The copper pigment is preferably metallic copper and/or cuprous oxide, or less preferably a cupric compound, and constitutes 10-40% by weight of the composition. The dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane may be 10-25% by weight of the pigment weight and 2-5% of the total composition. The composition may contain a binder such as shellac, rosin, hydrogenated rosin or abietic acid, a mineral spirit or xylene solvent, and conventional pigments, extenders and plasticizers. Reference is also made, as base vehicles, to oleoresinous varnish, tar varnish and pitch varnish, without further description. Exemplified compositions contain iron oxide, magnesium silicate, gum rosin, heat-treated menhaden oil, mineral spirits and (Example 1) 16À4% by weight cuprous oxide and 4À1% dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane or (Example 2) 35À2% metallic copper and 3À5% dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane.
