Abstract

A paint, lacquer or ink composition comprises a non-aqueous organic medium, a film-forming material and a minor proportion of benzotriazole as a copper-corrosion inhibitor. Optionally, sodium nitrite, triethanolamine phosphate or an N-acyl sarcosine, e.g. oleoyl sarcosine may also be present. In examples: (1) a bronze ink is formed from bronze pigment, benzotriazole, and a gravure ink medium based on a polyvinyl acetate/polyvinyl chloride copolymer dissolved in a mixture of cyclohexanone and methyl ethyl ketone together with a standard plasticizer; (2) a bronze lacquer is formed from bronze pigment, benzotriazole, and a clear lacquer comprising cellulose nitrate, dioctyl phthalate and a non-drying oil-modified alkyd resin; (3) a bronze paint was formed from bronze pigment, benzotriazole and a linseed oil modified pentaerythritol alkyd resin in white spirit.ALSO:A paint, lacquer, or ink composition comprises a non-aqueous organic medium, a film-forming material and a minor proportion of benzotriazele sufficient to enhance the stability of the composition to copper or copper alloy and/or to inhibit the corrosion of copper or copper alloy by the composition. The composition may itself contain copper or copper alloy, e.g. bronze pigment. Optionally, sodium nitrite, triethanolamine phosphate or an N-acyl sarcosine, e.g. oleoyl sarcosine, may also be present.
