Abstract
A solution of a hydroxy salt of a drying metal in a film-forming composition is produced by adding a minor amount of the hydroxy salt of the metal and a water insoluble non-volatile non-aromatic organic acid to a film-forming vehicle and heating to a temperature high enough to effect reaction and solution between the salt and the vehicle. Naphthenates are the preferred salts and the preparation of the hydroxy metal salts is disclosed in Specification 507,361. Specified salts are hydroxy cobalt manganese or iron naphthenates, the hydroxy manganese salt of 2-ethyl hexin acid, and the hydroxy cobalt salt of castor oil fatty acid, and examples are given of the incorporation into (a) raw linseed oil, east india gum and solvent; (b) rosin, lime, perilla oil, and solvent; (c) resin, linseed oil, linseed oil fatty acids and thinner, and (d) linseed oil, rosin and mineral spirits. A mixture of more than one of the driers may be employed and solid driers may be prepared in the absence of oils or solvents, thus rosin or linseed oil fatty acids may be fused with the hydroxy cobalt salt.
