Abstract
A primer composition of pigment volume 33 to 53% comprises red lead, calcium plumbate, zinc chromate or an iron oxide of the bauxite residue type (Burntisland red) plus a phosphate of calcium, lithium or barium. Examples of phosphates are calcium hydrogen phosphate, tri-calcium phosphate, calcium tetra-hydrogen diphosphate, zinc phosphate, lithium phosphate, barium phosphate, and ground naturally-occurring phosphates. The medium may be a quick-drying or stoving medium; the binder may be a drying oil, a drying oil-alkyd resin, a styrenated or vinyl-toluenated alkyd resin, a phenolic resin/rosin mixture cooked into linseed/tung oil, a combination of a tung oil/phenolic resin/metallic soap complex with an alkyd resin, a combination of an amine-formaldehyde resin with an alkyd resin, butyl titanate, butyl titanate/silicone combinations, an epoxy resin ester, epoxy resin/amine or epoxy resin/polyamide system, or a polyurethane. Examples are given of media comprising (1) linseed oil, (2) a 59% oil length modified phenolic resin/tung oil containing 20% linseed stand oil, and (3) a 62 1/2 % oil length linseed oil pentaerythritol alkyd resin. The compositions may be applied by brushing, dipping or spraying to iron substrates after first removing loose rust.
