Abstract

112,644. Wade, H., (Saurer, A., [Firm of]). Nov. 18, 1916. Stopping.-In means for braking or stopping four-stroke internal-combustion engines, the camshaft is advanced through an angle of 90 degrees or less in order to produce compression effects in the cylinder and suction piping. The cam-shaft 3 carrying the admission cam 11 and exhaust cam 22 carries a screw 7 and is driven by a screwed toothed wheel 4. Longitudinal adjustment of the shaft by means of a lever 8 produces rotation of the shaft up to a maximum of 90 degrees. The action of the valves may thus be advanced up to a complete stroke of the piston. The suction piping is shut off and compression effects dependent upon the extent of the cam-shaft advance are produced. At one point in the operation, the admission valves open automatically to admit from the suction piping air which has been compressed during a previous cycle. To prevent noise due to this action, an auxiliary cam 12 is provided to produce the same effect.
