Abstract
1,125,792. Papermaking. CHEMIRAD CORP. 5 Oct., 1965 [16 Oct., 1964], No. 42198/65. Headings D2A and D2B. An aqueous suspension of cellulosic fibres is treated with a water-soluble aminoplast and a polyalkylenimine at a pH of at least 6.5 and may then be made into paper. The aminoplast may be added to the suspension before or after the polyalkylenimine, and may be anionic, cationic or non-ionic. Aminoplasts referred to are melamine-formaldehyde, ureaformaldehyde, dimethylolurea and other condensates of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde or formaldehyde-generating materials such as paraformaldehyde with urea, thiourea, n-alkylsubstituted ureas, guanidine, biuret, melamine and N-alkyl-melamines. Fillers such as clay, bentonite, diatomaceous earth, gypsum, talc, basic lead carbonate, whiting, titanium oxide, barytes, lithopone or silica may also be incorporated. Hydroxides of alkali metals or of alkaline-earth metals may be added to adjust pH. The paper may be heated after drying to make permanent the bonding between the cellulose and the additives.
