Abstract

1405751 Fillers BPB INDUSTRIES Ltd 20 July 1972 [27 July 1971] 35310/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division D2] A composite filler for use in the manufacture of paper and other fibrous web is made by preparing an aqueous slurry of a particulate filler, which slurry contains also 1 to 20% of a dissolved or dispersed organic polymeric material based on the weight of particulate filler, and spray drying the resulting mixture to form agglomerate particles. The total solids content of the slurry may be 5 to 55% by weight. The polymeric material may be rendered substantially insoluble in water in or by the process. Thus a water-soluble urea-formaldehyde condensate can be used which loses water-solubility on drying; casein or glue can be made insoluble by the inclusion of glyoxal or formaldehyde; and ammonia-solubilized acidic polymers or co-polymers, e.g. of the styrene-acrylic or styrene-maleic types, can be sufficiently insolubilized by loss of ammonia on drying. Specified fillers include calcium carbonate, especially whiting, ground limestone or ground dolomite. A surface-active agent may be added to the filler slurry. If of suitable consistency, the mixture in the course of spray drying may form fibres upon dispersion in the hot gas stream so that a filiform product comprised of solid filler particles bound together by the polymeric material is formed. The composite filler so made resists attack by acid in the form of alum used in paper-making and so enables whiting to be used as a filler in place of china clay. Dried paper sheets so made also show enhanced capacity-strength balance compared with simi lar sheets made with untreated filler. In paper sizing, the tendency to form hydrophobic froth with rosin soap size is reduced.
