[Also in Division D2] A recording and copying material that is sensitive to pressure and heat consists of or contains as a coating on a carrier a microporous film containing an insoluble pigment. The recording material is made by the process of Specification 1, 002, 407 when it consists of the microporous film, or, when the film is a coating on a carrier, it is made by a process that is similar except that the film is not removed from the carrier on which it is formed. The microporous film conceals the colour of the pigment until it is locally subjected to heat and pressure, when the particles of the film coalesce and the colour of the pigment becomes visible. In the example, a web of paper is coated with a solution of polyvinyl chloride in acetone and isopropanol containing carbon black. Other film polymers referred to are cellulose ethers and esters, polymers and copolymers of styrene, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, and vinyl acetate.
