Abstract
Compositions that form opaque coatings that can be transparentized by local application of pressure (see Division D2) comprise: ethylcellulose, dibutyl phosphate, magnesium carbonate and methylated spirits; and ethylcellulose, polyvinyl acetate, magnesium carbonate, tricresyl phosphate and methylated spirits. A composition for a non-pressure-sensitive coloured layer to underlie the pressure-sensitive layer comprises: Deep ultramarine blue, cellulose acetate and acetone.ALSO:Pressure-sensitive recording material comprises a base sheet, a pressure-sensitive coating, which includes a thermoplastic resinous material, a plasticizer and a pigment, and is normally opaque but becomes transparent when pressure is applied to the sheet, and a protective overcoating applied over the pressure-sensitive coating. The protective overcoating may be applied as a solution in a solvent which does not dissolve the pressure-sensitive coating and may be transparent and colourless. The base sheet may be coloured throughout or only on its coated surface, and the pressure-sensitive coating is then of a colour that contrasts therewith. Alternatively, the base sheet may be transparent or translucent, and the colour-contrasting layer applied over the pressure-sensitive layer. The base sheet may be of paper. The coloured layer thereon may be a coating of pigment, binder and solvent with or without a dispersing agent. The Specification gives seven suitable compositions. The pressure-sensitive coating may comprise ethyl-cellulose or polyvinyl butyral or ethylcellulose and polyvinyl acetate or polyvinyl butyral and polyvinyl acetate or a copolymer of vinylidene chloride and acrylonitrile or polyvinyl alcohol with, in each case, a plasticizer, magnesium carbonate and a solvent, which may be methylated spirits for all but polyvinyl alcohol, for which it may be water. The overcoating may be of polyvinyl alcohol or chlorinated rubber or ethyl-cellulose.
