Abstract

[Also in Division C3] An apparatus for continuously carrying out solution polymerisation reactions is in the form of a shaft-like polymerisation reactor 1 comprising at least two sections arranged one above the other in which, for the removal of liberated heat, cooling elements 2, 4, 5 are mounted in a laminar manner transversely to the vertical main direction of flow of the reaction mixture, said cooling elements extending across substantially the whole of the internal diameter of the shaft. The cooling elements, e.g. pipes or ribbed pipes are arranged in assemblies which may alternate with spaces 3 in the reactor which are free from elements, or closely packed assemblies may alternate with less closely packed assemblies. The lower part of the reactor has housing 6 for coolant. Flow stabilisers in the form of dose-meshed lattices 15 or vertical parallel metal sheets 17 may be provided. The reaction mixture flows from inlet 7 to outlet 8. In the example, the apparatus is used for the polymerisation of acrylonitrile (see Division C3).
