Abstract

1361326 Apparatus for preparing water WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 25 July 1972 [9 Sept 1971] 34663/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division G6] Apparatus for combining hydrogen and oxygen, particularly in a nuclear reactor installation, comprises a housing having inlet and outlet openings and containing an electrical heater element over which gas is intended to pass during its passage from the inlet to the outlet openings. In one embodiment (Fig. 3) the openings are afforded by respective sets of louvres 17, 18. The heater element comprises a stack of units 19 disposed in an inner shroud 20 within the housing 16 so as to define a preheating section 31 and a combination section 20a. A fan 25a improves gas circulation. A partition 23 separates the lower chamber in the housing from an upper, cooling chamber 28. In another embodiment (Fig. 5) a vertical, sheathed heater element 32 is surrounded by a shroud 31 so as to define a preheating section 30a. In certain cases, the combiner is water cooled.
