1,125,131. Brush holder for dynamo-electric machines. MORGAN COMPONENTS Ltd. 14 Oct., 1965 [22 Oct., 1964], No. 43139/64. Heading H2A. In a brush holder for a dynamo-electric machine having a lever arm 4 pivoted within an open-topped box or hull 1 and loaded by at least one compression spring 10 which is wholly accommodated within the open-topped box 1 so as to be shrouded against flash-over from adjacent live components of the machines, the arrangement of the, or each, spring is such that the movement arm of the force applied by the spring about the lever arm pivot 7 increases as the spring extends to give a constant loading to a brush mounted in guide 2, 3 of the holder. As shown, the brass brush holder 1 has a pressure finger 5 with an insulating tip 6 attached to a saddle lever arm 4 supported on nylon bushes 8 on spindle 7. The compression springs 10 (and 9, see Fig. 2, not shown), are arranged to bias the lever arm either side of a dead centre position, either against a back stop provided by the casing 1, for removal of the brushes or into engagement with the brushes as shown dotted. Within the saddle 4 is a similar lever arrangement 13 loaded by a compression spring (15, Fig. 2, not shown), which has the same loading effect as the combination of the springs 9 (and 10). Movement of the pressure fingers into the brush guides 2, 3 is limited by stops 16, 17. The springs slide on nylon cores (18, 19, Fig. 3, not shown) which provide a damping action. The brushes may be single or a pack of carbon blocks.
