Abstract
A transversely elastic fabric is produced by dry spinning a yarn from a cellulose acetate solution at a temperature of from 40-45 DEG C, slowly extracting solvent from the yarn in a slow air stream, weaving a fabric incorporating such yarn in the weft, subjecting the fabric to a moist heat treatment and thereafter to a finishing treatment, all such treatments being carried out without tension. The woven fabric is de-sized and is embossed at a temperature of 120-130 DEG C at a pressure of 4-7 tons per metre working width for a contact period of not less than 10 seconds before or after the moist heat treatment which is carried out by hot water at a temperature of 95-98 DEG C or by steam for a period of up to one hour. The embossing rollers may be provided with a dot or crepe pattern and a counter pattern. The fabric is heat set in a slack condition on a stenter at a temperature of 170-200 DEG C for a period of 20-30 seconds and is finished in steam at a pressure of 1.8-2.5 atmospheres for a period of 3-5 minutes. The fabric may be dyed and heat treated for fixing the dye either before or after the moist heat treatment. The moist heat treatment may be preceded by a swelling treatment effected by immersing the fabric in a 2-5% solution of acetone at room temperature for a period of 2 hours or a 10% solution of calcium chloride, zinc chloride or magnesium chloride at room temperature for 2-4 hours. Examples disclose the treatment of a woven fabric having a secondary cellulose acetate weft yarn as specified above and a cellulose acetate warp yarn.
