Abstract

1,123,080. Control systems for arc producing apparatus. SIEMENS A.G. 11 July, 1967 [12 July, 1966], No. 31949/67. Heading H2H. Arc producing apparatus 7 fed from a rectified A.C. supply and provided with a high frequency device 8 for initiating the arc is further provided with means for shunting or short-circuiting the input to the device 8 after the arc 7 is struck so as to disable the device, filter circuits 5, 6; 22, 23 being incorporated into the supply circuits to prevent high frequency transients from reaching the supply. Closure of switch 17 energizes the high frequency device 8 to strike the arc 7 and also energizes transformer 11 to supply anode-cathode potential for a thyristor 9. When the are 7 strikes and takes a supply from rectifier 1, a pulse is developed by a transformer 2 which fires the thyristor 9. Firing of thyristor 9 gates a second thrystor 10 whereupon a shunt circuit is developed across the input to the high frequency device 8 so as to reduce its applied voltage thus to terminate the functions of the device. When the current in the arc 7 is sufficient the potential across a resistor 3 energizes relay 15 to remove the supply to the high frequency device 8. A thermal switch 16 is provided in the supply to the device 8 for protective purposes. The rectifier bridge 18 and thyristor 10 may be replaced by a pair of back-to-back thryistors.
