Abstract
1,122,399. Loudspeakers. DECCA Ltd. 20 Aug., 1965 [26 Aug., 1964], No. 34920/64. Heading H4J. A moving coil loudspeaker has a circular piston-like diaphragm which is coupled to the loudspeaker housing via a loaded compliant coupling so as to improve low frequency response by introducing multiple resonances at #2 and 1/#2 times the basic resonance frequency. The peripheral coupling 18 and spider 17 may be sheets of natural fibre, e.g. doped linen, artificial fibre e.g. nylon, plastics, e.g. PVC or metal, e.g. aluminium. The loaded coupling includes a channelled annulus of aluminium having the same effective area and mass as the diaphragm. More than one such annulus may be used and the annulus need not be continuous. The loudspeaker is mounted in an aperture of a closed casing whose enclosed volume V cu. ins. is related to the diameter D ins. of the diaphragm by the relationship D = 0À86 4#v The coupling 18 serves to seal the gap between the diaphragm and its support. The diaphragm may be conical, flat or dish-shaped and is preferably made of foamed polyurethane.
