Abstract

A substrate of e.g. a polymeric material, glass, ceramic, paper, cloth, carbon graphite, wood or a metal e.g. Mg, Fe, Cu, brass is coated with aluminium by decomposing an aluminium hydride in the presence of a catalyst which may be ZrCl4, NbCl5, VOCl2, VOCl3, TiCl4, 2[(C2H5)2 O2], TiCl4, TiBr4, VCl4, Ti (OC2H5)2 Cl2, TiCl2 (i-OC3H72, TiCl2 -2 [C2H5)zO], Ti (BH4)3, 2[(C2H5)2O] The aluminium hydride may be AlH3, AlH2, Cl, AlH2, Br, and LiAlH4. Decomposition may take place at room temperature, the substrate may be heated or ultraviolet light or electron bombardment, may be used. The catalyst may be applied to the substrate in a solvent with a wetting agent, as a finely divided solid or by vapour deposition, and may be in the form of a pattern. The hydride may be applied as a solution or suspension, as a finely divided solid or as a vapour. The substrates may be first sulphonated or subjected to a corona discharge.
