Abstract

1,121,442. Clamps; partitions. W. J. FISHER. 14 Oct., 1966 [15 Oct., 1965], No. 43847/65. Headings E1W and E2B. A clamping device comprises a holder element adapted to be fixed to a partition element, the holder element including an open channel 2, a clamping element 4 disposed within the open channel and movable inwards into a retracted position and outwards of the holder element, spring means (not shown) between the clamping element and the holder element to urge the clamping element in the outward direction and means for moving the clamping element into the re tracted position in the channel against the action of the spring means and for holding the clamping element in the retracted position until released. In the construction shown the holder element is an H shaped member providing not only the open channel 2 but an additional open channel 3 facing in the opposite direction; the channel 3 is intended to be fitted over the top end portion of the partition element. The clamping element is of inverted U section and the means shown for retracting the clamping element is a cam 9 fixed in the lower channel 3 so that it can be pivoted between opposite walls of the channel 3. The cam includes a roller (not shown) mounted at the end of an arm the roller bearing on the bottom of a U shaped member 7 which is connected to the clamping element, the member 7 having four legs 8 which pass through grooves in the cross member 5 of the holder element to be fixed to the clamping element. The spring means is either a block or bar of foam rubber or a coil or leaf spring. In a modification the cam and member 7 are replaced by an arm pivoted near one end to a bracket connected to the cross member 5 of the holder element in a slot, the free end portion of the arm being connected by a link 13 with an anchor plate which is bolted to the clamping element, the arrangement being such that rotation of the arm retracts the clamping element, the pivot between the arm and the link passing over a dead centre to hold the clamping element in the inoperative position. A removable tool is used to pivot the cam in the first construction and the arm in the second construction.
