Abstract

1,121,280. Joint-making packing; pipe joints. F. W. PASS, and W. PASS, [trading as GUMMIWERK PASS & SOHN]. 24 Feb., 1966 [8 May, 1965; 26 June, 1965; 19 Aug., 1965], No. 8193/66. Headings F2B and F2G. A sealing ring 15 for a spigot and socket pipe joint comprises a tubular portion 19 and a radially extending flange 16 having a reinforcing portion 17 which is separated from the tubular portion by a slot 18. The flange 16 may be inclined away from the portion 19 as shown in Fig. 2 and extends radially inwardly of the portion 19 to form a shoulder 21. The ring 15 is of elastic material such as natural or synthetic rubber and in use, Fig. 1, the portion 19 fits tightly on the end 12 of the pipe 10 with the shoulder 21 abutting the end of the pipe, the outer margin of the flange 16 engages the socket wall 13 of pipe 11 to form a sealing lip 20 separated by a small gap 23 from the reinforcing portion 17 which acts to centre and support the pipe end 12 in the socket 13. The space between the pipe end 12 and the socket end 13 is filled with a grouting compound 14. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the axial width of the reinforcing portion (17) increases at a constant rate from a narrowest to a widest point which is indicated by a peg (24) and is positioned in the joint so that, when the pipe run is other than vertical, it is at lowest point of the pipe (11) and supports the weight thereof. In further modifications, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the reinforcing portion comprises spaced arcuate portions 17<SP>1</SP>, 1711 and 1711<SP>1</SP>.
