Abstract

Starch is subjected to enzymatic hydrolyses in presence of an ester, containing more than 8 carbon atoms, which acts as an anti-gelling agent. The resulting hydrolyzates containing the ester may have a concentration of 15-60%; i.e. the aqueous colloidal solution contains 15-60 parts by weight of hydrolysed starch (dry weight) per 100 parts of solution. In a further embodiment, " modified " starch hydrolysates are made by performing the hydrolysis in presence of at least one vinylic, acrylic or phenolic monomer, urea-formaldehyde compound or melamine-formaldehyde compound or water-soluble polycondensate thereof, together with a polymerization catalyst. The resulting hydrolysates are stated to contain a mixture of (1) hydrolysed starch, (2) starch-monomer copolymer and (3) homopolymers or copolymers of the above monomers. In Example (1), starch is hydrolysed by alpha-amylase in presence of monoglycerides of fatty acids. In Example (2) one or more vinylic and/or acrylic monomers, e.g. vinyl acetate or acrylic ester are added, together with sodium or potassium persulphate or hydrogen peroxide, to an aqueous suspension of starch containing amylase and monoglycerides of fatty acids. The proportion of monomer is 2-30% by weight of starch. The monomers are stated to polymerize in emulsion to form an aqueous suspension. In Example (3) a urea-formaldehyde or melamineformaldehyde compound or polycondensate thereof is added to the reaction mixture in presence of a base such as ethanolamine. In Example (4) there is added to the reaction mixture, by weight of starch, 1-4% of phenol or cresol, 1-10% of formaldehyde and 0.3-0.5% of ammonia or sodium hydroxide.
