Abstract

Mercuric oxide catalyses the reaction of acrylic acid with vinyl acetate to form vinyl acrylate. Specifications 731,226 and 862,419 are referred to.ALSO:A mixture of acrylic acid, one or more unsaturated compounds copolymerizable with acrylic acid, and a minor amount of a compound which has two or more separately copolymerizable centres and which is capable of polymerizing with the other monomers, is copolymerized in an aqueous medium to provide a copolymer which is water-soluble or which may be made water-soluble by the neutralization of the acid groups present, such cross-linking compound being other than a polyalkenyl polyether of a polyhydric alcohol containing at least 4 carbon atoms to which are attached at least 3 hydroxyl groups. Lists of monomers are given. The exemplified copolymer is of acrylic acid/methyl acrylate and vinyl acrylate polymerized in the presence of (a) ammonium persulphate and ammonium acetate or (b) aqueous NaOH, t-butyl hydroperoxide, ammonium persulphate and sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate. Polymer (a) was neutralized by ammonia. Specifications 731,226 and 862,419 are referred to.
